Podophyllum Emodi, commonly known as Indian Mayapple, is an important medicinal plant found in the Himalayan region of India. It has been used for centuries in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of various ailments.
The plant grows to a height of 1.5-2m and produces a single large, white or pink flower in the spring. The leaves are large and divided into five to seven leaflets. The fruit of the plant is a large, yellowish-green berry-like pod which contains many small, yellow, edible seeds.
The most important part of the plant is the root. It is rich in the active ingredients podophyllotoxin and alpha- and beta-peltatin, which have anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties. In traditional medicine, the root is used to treat jaundice, diarrhea, enlarged liver, and dysentery. It is also used as an astringent and as a laxative.
The fruits of the plant are also edible and are used in many Indian dishes. They have a sweet, tart flavor and provide a good source of vitamins A and C. The leaves can be boiled and eaten as a vegetable.
Podophyllum Emodi is a hardy and easy to grow plant. It prefers shaded, moist areas and is suitable for growing in gardens and containers. It is a popular choice for herb gardens and is often used to attract birds and butterflies.
