Adenium Obesum, commonly known as desert rose, is a succulent plant native to arid regions of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It is prized for its beautiful, tubular flowers which come in shades of pink, red and white. The plant has fleshy, smooth leaves and a bulbous swollen stem that stores water for times of drought.
Adenium Obesum seeds are very hard and can remain viable for many years. The seeds need to be treated before they can be germinated, often requiring scarification or soaking in hot water. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, they need to be potted up and grown in well-drained soil. They need plenty of bright light and regular watering to thrive.
Adenium Obesum is a popular ornamental plant and is grown worldwide in warm climates. It requires minimal care and can live for many years with proper care. It is often grown in containers or bonsai dishes and can be pruned to maintain its shape.
The desert rose can be propagated through cuttings, which are easily rooted in moist soil. It can also be propagated through grafting a variety of Adenium onto the trunk of the original plant. Grafted plants usually flower earlier than those propagated by cuttings, providing an early display of beautiful flowers.
